Work Zone Data Exchange Project

OVERVIEW

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded UDOT a grant to demonstrate the capability of gathering real-time data from active work zones and publishing that data to the public in a specific format. The USDOT has developed this specific data format with the goal of having a uniform data standard throughout the US.

UDOT will gather work zone data from six different work zones and publish the data in the USDOT format. UDOT will use various techniques to gather this data, including with some automated tools to reduce the effort involved.

BENEFITS OF THIS PROJECT

Uniform and real-time data on the configuration, extent, and timing of work zones can be useful to the traveling public in planning their trips and avoiding congestion. In the future, automated vehicles will also benefit from this vital data.
